Ruhrgebiet West

City Guide

A melting pot of the arts the west of the Ruhr region

The western Ruhr region boasts an enviable density of art museums. With their origins in private collections, these museums celebrate modern and contemporary art. The cultural heart of the region is Duisburg: with sculpture in the Lehmbruck Museum, paintings in the "Küppersmühle", and art treasures from places as far away as East Asia at the "DKM". Only 25 km north of Duisburg, we find the charming Albers Museum in Bottrop. Traveling the short distance south to Krefeld we find Mies van der Rohe's Haus Lange and Haus Esters. And between the two, in Essen, a real gem, the Museum Folkwang.
