Ruhrgebiet Ost

City Guide

Industry goes, art comes: the east of the Ruhr region

This much is true: The much-cited structural change has paid off for art. New buildings have been inaugurated at an impressive rate in recent years in the eastern urban Ruhr region. This makes Bochum, with its major collections, look almost traditional as an art center. In 2010, Museum Ostwall moved into the newly opened U-Tower in Dortmund. Since 2009, Hagen has had an art district of its own, with a new glass building for the work of Emil Schumacher at the venerable Osthaus-Museum. Unna trumps this with the only light art museum in the world, in the vaults of a former brewery. And in the north, in Marl, there is a sculpture park which extends over the whole city.
