A collection of Greek sculptures, both casts and originals is on display in Bonn’s oldest museum.

The Lion Gate of Mycenae is the oldest exhibit in the Bonn antiquities collection. It stands as a cast in Akademisches Kunstmuseum, which brings to life the ancient cultures of the Greeks, Romans and Etruscans. The central hall is given over to the most important casts of Greek sculpture such as the frieze from the Parthenon in Athens. They are in a condition that the originals once had but lost owing to pollution. The collection also includes 200 originals of marble, terracotta and bronze. The oldest museum in Bonn is located in a classicist building opposite the Schloss. In 2008, the museum was modernized from top to bottom and its colored window frames and decoration restored.
