The area around Neue Nationalgalerie and Potsdamer Strasse has become home to various galleries in recent years.

This area of Berlin was a blind spot for the art scene. But that all changed when in 2006 the esteemed Giti Nourbakhsch moved to Kurfürstenstrasse, bringing along with her artists such as Tomma Abts, Vincent Tavenne and Cathy Wilkes. In 2008 Sommer & Kohl, two former colleagues of Neugerriemschneider, founded their own gallery nearby and the very same year, Isabella Bortolozzi moved her emerging gallery to upper middle-class, wood-paneled premises on Schöneberger Ufer. The renowned Esther Schipper, who until recently had remained in the Mitte district, is now in the neighborhood too. And the relocation of gallery owner Martin Klosterfelde to Potsdamerstrasse caused quite a stir in 2009. Klosterfelde had made it big in the Mitte district in the 1990s alongside artists like John Bock and Christian Jankowski. Meanwhile, his mother Helga Maria Klosterfelde sells publications and prints in an old-fashioned and vintage-chic former stationery store close by. In 2010 the in-demand Matthias Arndt, who with artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn and Sophie Calle has long since made it to the top, arrived in the new ‘arty’ neighborhood.
