The Berlin art boom began 20 years ago in the city’s Mitte district. Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art was founded in 1991 in the backyard of an old housing block. With four floors and 2,000 square meters, it is a venue for temporary exhibitions of international contemporary art. Klaus Biesenbach founded the KW, as he did the Berlin Biennale, which takes place at the KW and other venues in the district. The Institute’s highly regarded program features presentations by popular Conceptual and experimental artists, as well as new and re-discoveries. The glass café/pavilion designed by Dan Graham was built in 1999. Since then, the majority of the galleries that were founded here have left the now expensive, touristy area. Among those that remain are Eigen+Art on Auguststrasse, the Kicken gallery specializing in photography, Barbara Wien and Neugerriemschneider on Linienstrasse. In 2008, Sprüth Magers Berlin moved into chic premises on Oranienburger Straße.
