The art pinnacles of the city that hosts the documenta
Even in years when the documenta is not on, the lights stay on in Kassel unlike what Harald Szeemann claimed back in 1972. In the Fridericianum, the Kunsthalle and the Kunstverein both support contemporary art. In Europes largest Baroque hillside park with the modernized Schloss Wilhelmshöhe Castle, the Gemäldegalerie showcases old masters from a collection that is among Germanys best. Other historical institutions that are part of the Kassel Museum World project to which the State of Hessen has committed 200 million euro, will be opening in 2013 to coincide with the 1,100th anniversary of the citys foundation.
