DRESDEN CITY GUIDE: KUNSTHAUS DRESDEN/STÄDTISCHE GALERIE FÜR GEGENWARTSKUNST
Originally constructed some 300 years ago as a home, Kunsthaus was first used in 1981 as a site for large art exhibitions, while after German reunification it became the Municipal Gallery for Contemporary Art. Today, Kunsthaus’ thematic exhibitions are well known throughout Germany with an approach that weds contemporary art and current social issues. Among a long list of artists who have participated in shows appear well-established names such as Jimmie Durham, Takashi Murakami or Tony Oursler – in addition to German and regional artists. The exhibition space: everything from the cellar to the rooftop, and in summer, even the open courtyard of the two-storey structure.
