Idylls, trading hub, discrete art metropolis

Each June, the international art world gets together for Art Basel, flocking to the towns numerous museums and exhibition houses as part of the event. Even though the pace during the rest of the year is somewhat more contemplative, the art programs devised by the various institutions are nonetheless exciting. Basels Kunstmuseum houses the largest art history collection in Switzerland, while Modern art is advocated in Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Kunsthalle and Kunsthaus Baselland. Some consider Fondation Beyeler located on the outskirts of the town to be the loveliest museum of all even by international standards.
