Untersucht wird der Einfluss der berühmten Schule von Barbizon auf die niederländische Malerei, welcher in der Entwicklung der Haager Schule gipfelte
Informationen zur Ausstellung: The exhibition The Dutch in Barbizon is thematically related to the show The Dutch in Paris: Breitner, Van Gogh, Mondriaan in the Van Gogh Museum. The Barbizon exhibition focuses on the Dutch artists who went to live and work in the vicinity of the French village of Barbizon, near the Forest of Fontainebleau. Vincent van Gogh wrote about these painters to his brother Theo as early as 1883: ‘Think of Barbizon, that’s a wonderful story.’
Never before has an exhibition focused entirely on the Dutch reaction to the famous School of Barbizon; in doing so, it also examines the role played by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. After all, it was his collection that made it possible for Dutch artists to see the art of the Barbizon School with their own eyes, and this in turn significantly influenced the development of the Hague School of painting.
